Peru and the Amazon

Peru is one of the few countries with a high degree of biodiversity in a variety of ecosystems; in fact Peru is one of the twelve megadiverse countries in the world. The Peruvian Andes are the birth place of the great Amazon River which in its turn gives life to the world’s largest tropical forest.

The Amazon Rainforest covers 40% of South America and 60% of Peruvian territory and homes most of Nature species that account for Peru’s top ranks: Almost 10% of all the species of plants, 10% of all the fish including the arapaima, fresh water largest; also are found in Peru the most species of birds, ranking third in amphibians, including the black cayman, third in mammals, including the ocelot and the great river otter, second in primates with 35 species and the first place in butterflies besides thousands of spiders and insects that make Peru and its Amazon Rainforest a true Nature’s paradise.

It’s not only its rich biodiversity that make the Peruvian Amazon an extraordinary place but also its people that depend in great manner on the river and the jungle for their everyday living. There are over 4 million people living in the Peruvian Amazon, including 65 original indigenous groups that still preserve their Nature deity beliefs, their traditions and customs despite the menaces brought to their paradise by modern civilization.

There are a lot of Peru Amazon tours offered online to experience life and wildlife in its most basic and authentic meaning.
